Adopting a Tortoise

Tort Towers Rescue is committed to finding the perfect forever home for every tortoise in our care. As a family-run organisation, we uphold strict rehoming policies and guidelines to ensure each tortoise is placed with an owner who can meet their lifelong needs. Our thorough process prioritizes the well-being of the tortoises and respects the trust placed in us by their current carers.

How to Apply

To apply to rehome a tortoise, prospective adopters must complete and submit a rehoming application form, accompanied by supporting photos of the proposed environment. Please read the following in full before applying.

Applications without photos will not be accepted.

  • Review Process:

    • Once received, we will review your application and contact you within 7 days if you are successful.

    • We are happy to answer questions, provide guidance, and make recommendations to help you prepare for rehoming a tortoise.

No prior experience with tortoise care is required, but applicants must demonstrate a willingness to learn and meet our criteria.

Rehoming Criteria

Before applying, please ensure you meet the following requirements, as they are critical to ensuring the tortoise’s health and happiness:

  • Adopters must be at least 18 years old.

  • Adopters must show evidence of suitable research or knowledge about tortoise care, specific to the species they wish to adopt.

  • Housing:

    • Provide a spacious outdoor enclosure with access to a weatherproof indoor area equipped with suitable heating, UV lighting, and humidity control tailored to the tortoise’s species.

    • Vivariums are not suitable for most tortoise species.

    • Photos of both indoor and outdoor enclosures are mandatory.

  • Mixing different tortoise species in the same enclosure is not permitted.

  • Diets primarily consisting of vegetables or fruit are not appropriate for most tortoise species. Adopters must provide a species-specific and balanced diet.

  • Proof of a suitable environment must be provided via photos or, at our discretion, a virtual or in-person home visit.

  • If approved, adopters must personally collect the tortoise. We do not permit the use of animal couriers.

Our Commitment

Tort Towers Rescue will only rehome a tortoise when we are confident the new owner can provide a safe, nurturing, and species-appropriate environment for the entirety of the tortoise’s life.

We work closely with applicants to ensure the best match for each tortoise, offering support and advice throughout the process.

Donations

As a family-run organization, Tort Towers Rescue does not charge a rehoming fee or require ongoing membership fees. However, we rely on donations to continue caring for tortoises in need and maintaining our website. If you are able, we kindly ask you to consider making a small donation to support our mission.

Thank you for choosing to rehome a tortoise through Tort Towers Rescue. Together, we can ensure these remarkable creatures find loving, forever homes.
